Jalama Road Beans Now Available For Sale Online
Our favorite farmstand, located just a few miles west of Highway 1 near Lompoc, California on the road to Jalama Beach, has started selling their awesome dried beans online. As you may recall from the May/June 2012 issue of spenser the Jalama Road Family Farmstand is run by Grace Malloy, Erin Pata, and Carla Malloy.
The two families work their respective properties, situated on opposite sides of the same small creek, right off Jalama Road. Their ultimate goal is to build a community gathering spot, highlight traditional farming methods, and work the land in a respectful and regenerative manner.
Aside from growing their own fresh fruit and vegetables, like tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, corn, peas, pears and blueberries, they bottle their own honey, collect fresh eggs each morning, make their own preserves, and harvest and sell four different types of dried beans.
The beans are grown by Kenny Pata, Erin’s husband, on the Pata family farm. They are dry-farmed, meaning that they are not irrigated or watered, which helps to save precious water in drought-prone Central California.
Erin designs and prints the muslin sacks in which the beans are packed. Their young children, Anna, Adam and Claire, then help fill the bags of beans with their mother.
